I was sitting at my desk at Neways today, fingers on keyboard, eyes staring out the window, daydreaming about NOT being at my desk. More specifically, I was imagining stepping into my hotel room in Hawaii tomorow, heading out to the balcony, and gazing at the Pacific as the rhythmic sound of the surf calmed my soul.
And that was when my boss entered my cubicle, handed me the camera I will be using to snap blog-shots for this trip, and said, "Make sure you know how to use this."
Me and technology--we don't get along. I started pushing buttons, and suddenly the camera flashed. You can see the result above. Notice the pained look etched on my face...the Neanderthal confusion and, yes, fear of the unknown.
I award round one of this battle to the camera, but I'm not giving up. Still, it's nice to know that I will have another photographer on the trip, Mr. Steve Bons, whose photos I'll also be posting. I'm guessing that you will have no trouble at all discerning between his shots and mine.
It's the eve of my flight to Hawaii to party with the Crown Diamonds of the world. If I'm able to figure out the dang camera, I'll document my day of travel for you. At the very least, perhaps you'll get to see another shot of me staring dumbly at the camera.

今日は僕のデスクで、明日はハワイ
今日、ニューウエイズの僕のデスクに座って、指はキーボードに乗っているものの、窓の外を眺めながら、自分のデスクにいないことを空想していました。もっと具体的に言うと、明日ハワイのホテルで自分の部屋に入り、バルコニーに歩み寄って、心落ち着く規則正しい波の音にうっとりしながら、青い太平洋を見つめている自分を想像していたのです。
そのとき、上司が僕のデスクにやってきて、カメラを差し出しました。この旅行でブログに掲載する写真を撮るのに使うカメラです。｢使い方をちゃんと覚えておいてくれよ。｣
僕とテクノロジは相性が良くないんですよね。ボタンをいろいろ押し始めたら、突然カメラが閃光を発しました。その結果が上記の写真です。僕の顔ににじみ出ている痛みがわかりますか。まるで原始人が今の世のテクノロジに出くわして戸惑っているような顔、そうなのです、未知への恐怖なのです。
カメラとの決闘の第1回戦は、カメラの勝ちだと認めますが、あきらめたわけではありません。幸いなことに、この旅行には、別のカメラマン、スティーブ･ボンズさんが同行してくれ、彼の写真も掲載します。どれがスティーブの撮った写真で、どれが僕の撮った写真かは、皆さんにもきっと一目瞭然だと思います。
ハワイに飛んで、世界中から集まるクラウン･ダイヤモンドの皆さんとパーティを楽しむ前夜です。このカメラの使い方がわかったら、僕の旅行について皆さんに写真で紹介しますからね。良い写真が撮れなかったらせめて、カメラをトンチンカンな表情で見つめている僕の顔をまた見てもらうことになるかもしれません。
